Rather than being written like a story from point A to point B, it has some scenes from her life growing up but also shorter chapters that are more rants or raves on certain topics. I love this. I found myself thinking about her stories as if a friend told them to me. I would remember them and tell my mom, I was reading a friends blog the other day and she said the funniest thing.... then remembered it was from her book. Mindy is down to earth and likeable.

I think people who like the office and Mindy Kaling’s Comedy will get exactly what they expect from this book. Not your humor then don’t bother reading it.

“So I’m into men now, even though they can be frightening. I want a schedule-keeping, waking-up-early, wallet-carrying, non-Velcro-shoe-wearing man.”

The most true to life quote where I knew we could be best friends, from the chapter Best Friend Rights and Responsibilities: "If our phone conversation gets disconected, there is no need to call back. We take forever getting off the phone anyway. This was a blessing".

Funny read, I just wish we could all agree that the F word is not funny.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars. I would get it from the library and recommend with a warning about the language.

Vintage Modern Picture Frame

I saw this on pinterest a while ago and I loved it because I immediatley thought it was a DIY that I could do. I had a similar fram that was already painted and I wasn't using it!

I am not 100% sold on the pictures in the frame I just wanted something in them to get them hung on the wall. Pardon my crappy iphone picture but without it I wouldn't have any. I am too busy trying to keep newborn twins from bawling, a two year old from making a mess or getting into trouble, and making my house feel like I home so I don't go insane having to be stuck inside it all day long.

What do you think about the picture?

When I spent a week in the hospital after giving birth to my twins, I had a lot of short bursts of time inbetween running over to the nicu, pumping and sleeping. I had seen a lot of crochet things I had on my mental to do list for these babies, and since they came 2.5 months early I had this desire to get SOMETHING finished for them. So this is what it was! Now some of these are girly projects but I wanted to learn to make them too.

I just found out about this wonderful restaurant called Bumble in Los Altos. As if I needed another reason why California has it all. Not only is the design AMAZING but its concept is wonderful as well. This restaurant's goal is to: " gather, meet other parents, enjoy a healthy meal with their children, and/or relax with friends while the children play. The menu serves farm-to-table fare most anyone will enjoy- even if you don't bring children along"

As a kid I always thought it would be cool to live in an old church. I am not sure why, maybe because they have long halls, lots of room, and TONS of character? So when I saw this church that was converted into a house, I was so excited about it!

Everything in the home was bought at an auction for dirt cheap, or reclaimed / found. The kitchen and bath do NOTHING for me, but the living spaces I am so in love with.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

My sister in law lent me this book, so again I had to expectations. I had read the time travelers wife by the same author and liked it, but a second novel from the same author isn't always the same expectations.

This book started out really interesting. The plot and characters and very well developed and the multiple character view points are VERY well written and informative.

I am not sure if it was because I was pregnant and feeling very emotional but this book was dark and it made me feel dark inside. I am not sure I finished this book with a good feeling and because of that I would not read it again. I would hovever recommend it to a friend!

Top Knot Hat

I found a cute craft idea that I just had to make. I took a old t-shirt of my brothers (it was in the Value Village pile, don't worry) and cut it up using this tutorial and made 2 hats for my twin boys!

The new born size is just a tad large on my preemie baby boys, but in a few weeks they will fit perfectly! I can't wait.

Okay they didn't really like being my little models, but its okay. I was so excited that they turned out OK. What projects has everyone else been working on?

I firmly believe that the permanent and expensive purchases for your home should be neutral in color and the best quality you can afford. However, the accessories are meant to bring color and life to your room. It can sometimes take a lot of big bold ($$$) accessories to get your room looking not so builders beige showhome. Great, but no personality.

I have had a hard time finding art that I like because it all feels so manufactured and generic to me. After searching a while, I have found some fun colorful and INEXPENSIVE art ideas you can make yourself all using paint swatches. Once I decide on a shape I might have some coming to my house!

The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels

by Ree Drummond

This book was a great read. I finished it in two days. The story is so unbelievable and sweet I would think it was fiction! I would recommend it to anyone! I honestly have to say that I really appreciated Ree's morals and could relate to them, which was part of the reason I loved the book so much. If that isn't your thing you might think it a bit unbelieveable.

How To DIY An Upholstered Bed

OH Pinterest and the things you learn. I actually first heard about this from Sarah Richardson, but pinterest has the way of helping me remember with these great photos.

To achieve the look of a nice upholstered bed, you can simply upholster (wrap it in fabric) your box spring and add furniture legs. A simple inexpensive DIY bed.

Has anyone made a bed using this technique? I would love to hear about it.

I literally could not put this book down. It was so amazing and not predictable. I would recommend and want some friends to read it so I can discuss it with them!

This is a book I would (and did) buy rather than borrow from the library. Definatley a re-read.

The Actor and the Housewife by Shannon Hale

This book was pretty good. I would say it was great except for the last 2 pages. I could do without. I also skimmed a few paragraphs towards the end because it was taking to long to get to the point.

I would recommend this as a fun quick read and if I owned it I would re-read it.

Latley I ahve seen a lot of calligraphy and custom lettering in decor. While I love the look, I don't feel like my writing is pretty enough to free hand this stuff! My first thought is "I could totally make that!" but then I know it wouldn't turn out that pretty. Vinyl? It just looses that feeling that just makes it feel like its yours, you know? What to do...

While google searching to death kids rooms and modern nurserys, I came across this room that was so unique and cool I just had to share.

The thing that first caught my eye is the artwork, but I also love the neutral color with the pops of bright accent colors as well as the graphic rug. This would work well for both genders with only minor tweaking!

Now that the boys are here, I have short bursts of time in between feedings, but I am home bound. Not my favorite place to be stuck. Since the babies came 2 months early, I still have a few baby projects that needed to be done.

The first major one is the nursery, which I will post once I finish some last remaining details.

The second is some blankets and burp cloths. I buy the flannel pre punched at a craft store in Rexburg, but then I crochet around the edges.

This is the picot edge, its the most simple edge.

I wasn't sure I was going to like this one and it ended up being one of my favorites!

I believe this is the fan edge and this is the first time I have ever used it. I figured a burp cloth is the best place to use a new stitch in case you don't love it, its easy to undo.

This is a blanket I bought when I found out I was having twin boys. There is a co-ordinating blanket in the works as well. This is the hourglass crochet edge and its my all time favorite. I think its perfect for boys blankets because its not too frilly.

Gender Roles

As a mother I have always wondered where the gender lines fall.

Could I have a cute floral nursing cover because I am a girl and that is what I like?

Or should everything be blue because I have a son? Must my diaper bags and baby gear all reflect the gender of my baby?

What happens if I have a daughter next? Would it need to be replaced? Can items reflect my own personality or my child's?

Does my son get viewed as girly because he likes to give kisses and hugs? What personality traits have I taught him and what is just his inherent personality?

A few months ago I put feathers in my sons hair. I thought it was in style and kind of "Rock Star". Certain family members thought that was too feminine for a boy.

My son carries around toy trains in a purse. The other day he wanted to paint his nails because he saw me doing it. SO I let him.

Then I read this article and it all felt too familiar.

I am dying to know, what are your thoughts? Where do you draw the line? What things are OK for children to mimic of your behaviors?

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas - Book Review

How do you discuss a book about the Holocaust. This book was fiction so I went into it with a different perspective than the other books I have read on the topic. Told from a young boy's perspective, we get a glimpse into a life of a Nazi Commander's family living right next door to Auschwitz.
This boy was completely unaware of the "differences" between him and all the kids on the other side of the fence. He is so caught up in his own life and how lonely he is to not have friends to play with. He looks on with envy at all of the children on the other side of the fence and when he meets a boy who lives there he doesn't even grasp the reality of what is going on when that boy tells him of his life there.
While I find some things a little unrealistic because I know that it would be VERY rare for a child to be raised in such a prominent nazi home and have no idea why they shouldn't like the Jew's or why they were any different. I appreciate the sentiment that the author is trying to show to us and I feel like it taught me a few lessons on judging others and opinions of others.

When I think about this book I want to best sum it up with the thougts of John Lennon:
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people

A Christmas Countdown

So I am a bit of a scrooge when it comes to decorating for the holidays.

I don't really have a great place to set out smaller decorations (that I do own and love, but never really put out). SO I don't really read all the blog posts about decorating your mantle for ___________ season, or Halloween, spring, Easter, fall, thanksgiving.... decorations. CHRISTMAS however, is another story. I think Christmas only has the true feeling of Christmas when you look forward to it, plan ahead, listen to the music, bake, and all that goes with it including decorating. That is not to say that my house looks all christmasy all the time, but I do enjoy it.

When I read this in my daily blog reading, I HAD To share. Not for thanksgiving but would this NOT be the PERFECT Christmas countdown?

My thoughts:

This book was recommended to me by a friend, so I started reading having NO expectations or ideas on what the topic was about. I found this book interesting from page 1. It had so many twists it was completely unpredictable. My husband, who ALWAYS figures out the endings half way through the book (or movie) totally didn't guess this one. There are no inappropriate scenes or words, I would recommend this to anyone.

Jodi Picoult - Sing You Home

As usual, Picoult has me thinking in shades of grey and not black and white. At the beginning I was very interested in this IVF baby and the struggles of the couple to concieve. However, I find that the break up and new couples weren't developed very well and the new relationships seem to pop up out of nowhere. It makes it hard to cheer for the ladies as a couple. Whatever my personal beliefs, this book had me thinking about what I would do and how I would feel in that same situation. I loved the ending and it changed my overall opinion of this book. An interesting read, not for everyone, just the open minded.

Similar writing style to the Bergdorf Blondes book, this story is just as ridiculous and hard to believe, which also just makes it another funny book that's easy to read on the beach. Don't expect anything too serious, you can finish this in a day or two.

I love this book and thought it finished the series very well. I have to admit there were a few paragraphs I skipped because I just couldn't care less about the arrangement of government in Sweden. If I were to read it again I would keep a list of each characters names so I could keep them straight easier. Dorky, I know, but the foreign names just don't distinguish themselves in my mind very well.

This book really reminded me of the Shopaholic Series, only the american version. A story of New York Socialite Girls and the "troubles" with their lifestyle and getting that perfect blonde color and going husband hunting. It was really a funny, fast read. A few choice words turned me off a bit, but overall the book was a light fun read, perfect for a summer beach day. A one time read only. Get it from the library.

Four college girlfriends experience a traumatic weekend at a family lake house. 30 years later, one girl needs the others support and they return and have to deal with the emotions and dig up the truth about what did really happen that weekend so long ago.

I love Clayton's books about the power of friendship which leave me dying to call my own best friends from school, even though its 2am. This book, however, jumped between points of view and time periods so often that it became hard to keep the characters straight and identify with any of them. Her attempts to foreshadow and leave you hooked only confuse the reader further.

This book had potential, but I would never read it again.

Warning: if this were a movie it would be rated R

2011 Calgary Home + Design Show

Living in Calgary, great design events only come a few times a year. One of the events I love to attend is the Calgary Home + Design show. Not only is it a great place to see a lot of suppliers and contacts in the city, the guest speakers are always spectacular.

I got the opportunity to meet Brian Baeumler from HGTV's Diasaster DIY. Is he NOT hot? I waited in line for 30 minutes just to talk to him. He was super friendly and VERY easy on the eyes. My husband just laughed at me I was so excited about seeing him.

On a side note, do you not hate the moments as a new mom when you are so proud of yourself for getting dressed up and looking good, then when you see a picture of yourself (under flourescent lights no less) and just feel sick? That is how my picture with him turned out.

The Power Of A Slipcover

I love how Shelley's slipcovers unify the look of her living room, while inexpensively covering her thrift store purchases.

I have two tub chairs that are excellent quality that I stole from my mom's basement. The only problem? Purple and Teal. BLEH! I have tried to find some decent fabric to slipcover them in, but if its going to cost me a couple hundred dollars than it isn't really saving my anything to reupholster them. You know? So the fabric hunt is on. I can do this!

Furniture Arranging

One thing I love to do is re-arrange my furniture. I sketch it out while I am sitting in church, rearrange every time I vacuum, after Christmas, all the time. When I was in school I got tired of erasing and redrawing furniture using templates. A lot of people go out and purchase a magnetic set, which is nice, but for free you can use any graph paper (1 square is equal to 1 foot) and draw out your rooms shape on that. I also just found a great printable from Decorating Your Way that has templates for furniture!

DIY Car Playmat

Back in the day (a good 25 years ago) my aunt made my siblings and I a car mat to play with. The grankids still play with it at my mom's house and I wanted to make one just like it. My aunt used a yard of fabric that had a town on it, with streets, stores, houses, schools, etc. Then she added on to it and personalized it. No such fabric could be found when I went to make my own.

I preferred this method (making my own) to purchasing the inexpensive carpet at Ikea because it can fold up small and it can be washed. The only downside was that I had to make the entire thing myself.

This was a real labor of love and I learned a few tricks for next time. I would use smaller pieces of green "grass" fabric and iron them down to the grey base so they wouldn't move when I sewed them. It would look a little more straight and less wrinkled if I did that. I know for next time now!

After I finished this one I went to the states and found not exactly but a close enough fabric to use so I decided to make a car mat for my nephew whose name I have for Christmas (good thing he can't read yet!).

So for this mat I made it more similar to my aunts mat. I used the basic fabric and added to each end. I included Grandma's House, Airport, Hospital, school, church, etc.

Added bonus? for the first mat I only paid $4 for the grey fabric, the rest was scraps I had on hand. Second Mat - $5 for the green and car fabric. PLUS all my hours and hours of work and stress.

The Dining Room - My House

I recently began searching for the perfect drop leaf tables. After finding a table similar to this one below, with leafs that extend out each side, I am now on the search for the perfect chairs to go with it. I had always invisioned more contemporary chairs, but husband wants them to be really comfertable. Is there a compromise? What are your thoughts?

That friend of mine, she is up to it again. I have no idea where she gets these great ideas, but I know I love the outcome. Not only can she fix furniture she isn't in love with, she can build it from scratch. If only I could make her help me out!

REUPHOLSTER A SOFA - TUTORIAL PART 1

You have seen my sister in law's chair that I helped her to recover a few months ago. Totay we finally felt ready to tackle the sofa. She ordered fabric and I made suggestions and today we started.

She found this sofa at the local dumpster.

1. Remove previous fabric and vacuum out all the various treasures that you find inside.

2. Check the condition of the foam and cushions. Replace what is necessary.

3. Paint the frame if needed.

4. Cut the fabric to be the desired width (we ended upleaving plenty of extra space on either end because of the button tufts. Without the tufts, I would just make sure you have about 6" in case of any curves). If your fabric is vertical then make sure you leave extra fabric each place the patterns will match up. When you order the fabric, always order extra for large pattern repeats.

5. Center your fabric on the center of the sofa.

DIY... Vinyl Headboards

I have found the most clever vinyl headboards. Made by Blik, there are various headboards you can order in multiple colors for around $40. I think this is the perfect alternative to buying an expensive bed for a child, or to add color when you can't paint (renters I hear you!).

If you can paint, I think it would be fun to paint the inside of a more simple frame a bold pop of color. You could also put this on the wall as a template and paint over it and remove later! So many fun ideas...

One of my best friends, Kadie, who I went to Interior Design school with just remodeled her kitchen. She moved in knowing it would need some serious attention, but I think that she has done a better job than anyone could imagine in that kitchen.

I think it is just to die for. She sewed the roman blinds herself from a tutorial she found online and a target table cloth. Now if she would just make a road trip to help me with mine!

Showhome Sunday - Calgary Interior Design

I am very fortunate enough to live in a city that has hundreds of Show Homes. I used to work designing showhomes, and now that I don't, I love visiting them and getting decorating ideas. I thought I would post some on here every Sunday to share with those who aren't lucky enough to get to visit these on a weekly basis.

This house is a small, starter home. I love the paint colors the over all style.

This is my favorite kitchen style wise. I LOVE the white cabinets and stainless steel appliances. I think the table might be a bit big for the space. I would also love to sink the sink moved from the island to underneath the window.

The basement was finished in this one, with a sectional and an awesome stage with TV'S hooked up to ROCK BAND! There was also a game table, for an all over GAME ROOM!

Board and Batten Entry Way - FINALLY!

This is what my entry looked like when I moved in. (For more befores including the light check out my previous post here). This table I bought at auction and immediately sold. It just wasn't the look I wanted in this room. I know that the entry may not seem that important, but its an akward space and was just calling out to have something creative and 'different' in it.

So I came up with a plan. I have seen a few pictures of board and batten paneling all over the blog world and I was convinced that we could do it. I was also convinced the project would only take one day. HAHA, jokes on me.

So for Valentines day I told my husband the only thing I wanted was to start this project. I didn't realize in my project dreaming phase that my entry had really weird angles, meaning the boards would have to be cut at really weird angles. Also, the previous owners had installed tile baseboards. We debated whether or not to paint the tile white, putting paneling OVER the tile or just ripping it off. I thought ripping it off would look the best but husband ended up having to re drywall a lot of places where the baseboards came off.

This is what the paneling looks like today. I love it. The room needed some color, so I painted this console table I bought a few years ago at target.

The color was inspired from the framed vintage hankerchiefs that were crocheted by my great grandmother. I love them and love the color they add to this otherwise neutral room.

I still have plans to add a colorful rug by the front door as well as stain on top of the paint color for the console. I am just going to wait until we stain the deck outside and use the leftovers from that. I love the look. What do you think?

I hate to give away such a great source, but unfortunately I don't live in Idaho any more and I can't just make a 30 minute road trip to pick up every single piece of furniture that this lady sells.

I LOOOOOOVE this. Dreamt about it actually. A Steal at $45. Maybe the 12 hour drive from Calgary would be worth it, but then I couldn't shop at Target... dilemas.

Art Deco Bathroom NO MORE!

When I lived in Idaho Falls, I worked with a girl who decided to tackle a home renovation while living in her house. I decided she was very brave, but I loved what she had to work with. I was fortunate enough to get to use this in its before condition, I wish I could see the after in person. I love the classic look with the rust paint color. It still looks neutral while having personality at the same time.

I have plans for a few projects, but I have to start small because I still make my husband do all the drilling at our house. Kids Room Inspiration - Boys

I have been on the search for well designed kids rooms that aren't too" themey". For those of you who are interested and don't search blogs and websites until all hours of the night, I tought I would post the pictures.

You can get away with a dark wall color without the room feeling to dark by adding the white board and batten paneling to the bottom half of the wall.

The book cases are also a nice touch. I am not sure I love the white squares behind the art, I think it might be a little too much. To see more click here.

I love this nursery, the argyle walls are beautiful!

While this room does have somewhat of a theme, I think its a little more grown up and less cartoonish than other themes, so its okay.

This boys room is awesome. I love the idea of 3 boys sharing a room. Its all boy without being the classic red and blue. Its VERY well done. I would be willing to adopt 2 more boys to steal this room.

Restoration Hardware has the best boys rooms. I love that the art is more than just photos in frames. I love the letters, planes, etc. I think I found these when I was searching for art to display above my board and batten walls.

I think this big boy room is classy and fun.

These are from pottery barn kids and while buying the entire room from a store like this will add up quickly, my favorite part is that they have great ideas for decorations and some of the really unique odds and ends aren't too expensive to just buy from them.

Like I said, I have been on a paneling kick lately, as well as looking for a boys room. Hope this can help someone out.

Vintage Chair Reupholstered

Today was spend helping a friend reupholster her dumpster chair. She actually bought the chair and a matching sofa for $5 at the local dumpster's salvage yard. Seeing the potential but too afraid to start the project, she had this chair stashed in the basement for about a year. We discuss it often, debating how we would finish it, fabric to use, etc. We finally decided that today would be the day. I packed the car with my staple gun, paint, brushes, (and son). With a total of 4 kids all jumping in the chair, sitting in it, climbing on or over it, or fighting to get into it, its a miracle we got it finished. We learned a lot but took our time to get it done right. I must say I am really proud of this project. I feel ready to tackle the sofa soon. We are thinking of solid white. I can't wait!

Unique Headboard DIY

In reading my daily list of design blogs that keep me inspired, I found this amazingly unique headboard idea that I just had to share at Made2Create. Its a mix of rustic and ornate. I love the texture of the metal with the curved shape of the outline. Notice she used the same grey and yellow pillow I had for inspiration earlier? LOVE. Don't you worry, I am searching her site for a tutorial to add to my list as we speak.
